Bhering Advogados is a law firm founded in 1978 with headquarters in Rio de Janeiro and offices in Sao Paulo and Curitiba. It specialises in intellectual property, including trademarks, patents, industrial design, copyright and neighbouring rights, IT law, enforcement against counterfeiting and unfair competition, entertainment and advertising, cyberlaw, licensing, transfer of technology and IP litigation.
We consider the identification and management of intellectual assets important in achieving strategic goals, so we maintain a consistent connection between legal knowledge and the understanding of advances in science and technology.
With decades of expertise, Bhering Advogados is capable of providing specialised legal advice in all areas of intellectual property. We have a united team that ensures accurate and prompt assistance.
The firm is mostly responsible for the management and enforcement of patent portfolios of large multinational corporations, particularly companies based in the United States, Europe and Asia, and their Brazilian subsidiaries. These companies belong to various industrial sectors, such as automotive, aviation, chemical, biotechnology, engineering, electronics, entertainment, fashion, pharmaceutical, software, sports and telecommunications.
The firm’s policy is to provide personalised assistance to our clients. We strive to be proactive and to ensure that we always have full knowledge of their business.
We are among the few IP-specialised law firms with branch offices in Brazil. Our main office is in Rio de Janeiro, strategically close to the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office’s headquarters. The Curitiba branch was opened in late 2003 to provide services to our domestic and foreign clients located in the States of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul – a region with a heavy concentration of industries. The Sao Paulo branch opened in the country’s main business centre in 2004 and offers assistance in all fields of intellectual property to the subsidiaries of our foreign and domestic clients.
Our German department provides legal advice and assistance in German language to German-speaking clients. All of its lawyers have a solid legal background in German and European law.
The firm encourages and finances the education and training of our professionals abroad. A number of our members hold postgraduate, master’s or PhD degrees from the United States, Europe or Asia. This contributes to our broad knowledge of international laws and treaties. This foreign experience also enables our members to understand the international climate, the globalisation of the economy and the different business cultures and demands of our clients.
Some of our partners are active committee members of national and foreign IP associations.
Further, the firm’s lawyers and patent attorneys organise lectures, presentations and workshops for Brazilian clients – particularly aimed at legal, commercial and marketing departments – to disseminate the importance of protecting their IP rights in Brazil and abroad.
The firm has an in-house translation department working with our patent department. Divided by technology segments, it has a direct effect on successful claim coverage of the intended patents in Brazil. It translates all of the patent applications from the Patent Cooperation Treaty and the Paris Convention. Our team is prepared to translate from English, German, French and Italian. Texts are preferably translated from the original application contents in order to guarantee that all claimed subject matters are kept as originally intended.
