Richard’s work principally involves helping clients protect their inventions and designs, both in the United Kingdom and around the world. He advises on filing strategies and works on the draft applications to put those strategies into effect. He also handles patent prosecution across all intellectual property offices, maintaining focus on achieving the client’s goals.

Richard is a passionate advocate and regularly appears at EPO hearings defending patent grants, attacking competitor patents and convincing examiners to grant patents.

Richard’s work covers a broad range of technical subject matter including display panels, semiconductor devices, food technology, medical devices, pigments, catalysts, battery technology, metallurgy, and mechanical inventions.

His patent work is grounded in a strong research background. He has completed a PhD focussing on oxygen-ion conductors for use in fuel cells. Richard also undertook research projects at ETH Zürich in the field of metallic glass, and at the Indian Institute of Science, in the field of bioremediation.

Richard joined Carpmaels & Ransford in 2009 as a technical assistant and qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and a European Patent Attorney in 2013. He is an active member of the International Designs committee of AIPLA (American Intellectual Property Law Association).

Richard studied Natural Sciences (specialising in materials science) at Selwyn College, University of Cambridge, and completed a PhD within the Materials Science and Metallurgy department at the University of Cambridge. He has a Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary, University of London.

Out of work, Richard likes to relax on the river, rowing for his local rowing club.
