Thomas Chia - Via Licensing Corporation
Thomas Chia is director of patents and corporate development at Via Licensing Corp, an independent subsidiary of US audio pioneer Dolby Laboratories. An IP strategist and attorney with broad experience in complex technology and business matters, Dr Chia has amassed a substantial track record of structuring IP-centric business deals and other collaborative arrangements to commercialise some of today’s most valuable technologies. In this effort, he was instrumental in orchestrating significant IP deals with major technology companies, including Verizon, Alibaba and Toshiba, where his expertise in building bridges with other IP leaders creates significant long-term value for all parties.
At Via, Dr Chia is charged with streamlining access to the intellectual property needed to commercialise critical foundational technologies vital to the growth of today’s globalised high-tech economy. A highly regarded expert in standards-based technologies, multiparty IP programmes and fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory licensing – a subject on which he has been published in law reviews – Dr Chia has built a reputation for crafting industry-friendly deals that enable and promote innovation.
Before Via, Dr Chia served at the Ovidian Group, a premier IP and business advisory firm where he represented clients from all over the globe in developing and executing tailored IP strategies. He also managed worldwide licensing, patent prosecution and strategic patent acquisitions and divestitures for a publicly traded IP licensing company with over 1,200 global patent assets.
Dr Chia received his PhD in engineering from Yale University, where he published in several peer-reviewed engineering publications and served in the university’s tech transfer office. He earned his JD from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall) and is a registered US patent attorney.
