Thomas Chia is director of patents and corporate development at Via Licensing Corp, an independent subsidiary of US audio pioneer Dolby Laboratories. An IP strategist and attorney with broad experience in complex technology and business matters, Dr Chia has a track record of structuring IP-centric deals and collaborations to drive innovation around today’s most valuable technologies.

At Via, Dr Chia is responsible for streamlining access to the intellectual property needed to commercialise critical foundational technologies, which are vital to the growth of today’s globalised high-tech economy. A highly regarded expert in standards-based technologies, multi-party IP programmes and fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory licensing – a subject on which he has published in law reviews – Dr Chia has built a reputation for crafting industry-friendly deals that promote innovation and create value for all parties.

Before Via, Dr Chia served at the Ovidian Group, a premier IP and business advisory firm, where he represented clients from all over the globe in developing and executing tailored IP strategies. He also spent time at a publicly traded IP licensing company with over 1,200 global patent assets, where he managed worldwide licensing, patent prosecution and strategic patent acquisitions and divestitures.

Dr Chia received his PhD in engineering from Yale University, where he also published in several peer-reviewed engineering publications and served in the university’s technology transfer office. He earned his JD from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall) and is a registered US patent attorney.
