James A Trueman - Ocean Tomo LLC
James A Trueman is managing director of Ocean Tomo Investment Group and oversees the advisory services for Ocean Tomo, LLC. He holds the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Series 7 licence (FINRA CRD: 2320829).
Ocean Tomo, Investment Group LLC provides technology-rich companies with holistic advisory, investment banking and capital-raising services. These services fill a void in traditional investment banking by blending those functions with the company’s unique understanding of intellectual property – an underused asset class that requires specific expertise to understand and extract value. The company works with entities to engineer IP-based transactions across the liquidity and risk-return spectra, including privately held businesses contemplating liquidity events; publicly traded companies contemplating divestiture of non-core assets or M&A; and financial sponsors interested in IP-driven deal structures. Through its network of institutional investors, hedge funds and private equity investors, the company works with corporations, research institutions and entrepreneurs – large and small – to recognise IP value.
Ocean Tomo’s advisory services group is composed of transaction advisory, investments and non-securities investment banking. The group offers a purpose-built continuum of proven solutions to monetise patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and domain intellectual property. Its transaction services are designed to close efficiently sell-side, buy-side and licence-based transactions. The group’s services remain at the forefront of value extraction, monetisation and maximisation.
Before joining Ocean Tomo, Mr Trueman was vice president of business development at Acacia Research Corporation, where his responsibilities included driving patent acquisitions and partnerships in a broad range of high-value technology areas. As managing partner of M1 Partners, he offered IP licensing, transaction, business development and strategy consulting services across a diverse set of industries. As an engagement manager at McKinsey & Company, he led teams helping companies to grow existing businesses and launch new ventures. Mr Trueman started his career as a product manager, which included working in Oracle’s middleware business.
Mr Trueman holds an MBA from the Wharton School and a BS from the University of California, Berkeley.
