Ilkka Rahnasto - Nokia
Ilkka Rahnasto is a key figure behind Nokia’s success in patent licensing, having transformed its IP rights department into a successful business.
Dr Rahnasto joined Nokia in 1997 and became head of the company’s IP function in 2003, serving from 2010 to 2014 as Nokia’s deputy chief legal officer. Since 2014 he has led the company’s patent business, which manages one of the industry’s broadest and strongest patent portfolios – including a leading share of patents declared essential to wireless communications standards.
In 2015, under Dr Rahnasto’s leadership of its patent business, Nokia was one of the few companies to report more than $1 billion in annual licensing revenue. Continued growth saw patent and brand licensing for Nokia exceed €1.6 billion in 2017. Recently, new agreements have been reached with companies including Apple, Huawei, LG Electronics and Xiaomi. The company has also launched licensing programmes for the automotive, broadcast and consumer electronics markets, whose products increasingly use Nokia’s patented technologies.
Dr Rahnasto has a law degree from the University of Helsinki (1989) and an LLM from George Washington University (1996). His doctoral thesis on the regulation of intellectual property in the communications industry was published by Oxford University Press in 2003.
Dr Rahnasto is based at the Nokia headquarters in Espoo, Finland. In 2017 he was ranked first in the IAM Market Makers listing.
