Vice President, Patent Brokerage - TechInsights

Art Monk is vice president, patent brokerage at TechInsights, the global leader in IP consulting, patent brokerage services and technical analysis – now in its 27th year in business, having served over 2,000 clients in that time. In his present role at TechInsights, Mr Monk has been responsible for facilitating numerous high-value patent divestment and procurement transactions involving clients in Japan, the United States, Taiwan and Europe.

Mr Monk’s unique contribution to the buy-side and sell-side engagements that he oversees with the team of brokerage professionals at TechInsights is the evidence of use documentation and reverse engineering data which the company provides to support the value of patent assets in both brokered transactions and monetisation programmes. Mr Monk has led the deployment of advanced transaction models and deal structuring activities in the course of the brokerage work he has managed for TechInsights’ clients.

Before TechInsights, Mr Monk was CEO of Inflexion Point Analytics, an entity focused on large-scale patent transactions and the patent analytics needed to support their brokerage. He has been active in patent brokerage for over 12 years. Mr Monk lives in Silicon Valley, where he has held marketing and product management roles in technology leaders and start-up ventures. At Hewlett-Packard, he facilitated the creation of the company’s value-added reseller channel; and at ROLM Corporation he rose to the level of group product manager, overseeing the company’s telecommunications switching products.

Mr Monk has participated actively in new venture formation and angel investor forums, where he has been called on to advise start-ups, investors and government agencies on the commercialisation of technology and the monetisation of intellectual property.

Mr Monk amassed considerable experience in electron microscopy, solid-state physics, computer simulation and systems modelling through research work at the University of Manitoba and the University of Alberta. He holds a BSc in physics (honours), an MSc in biophysics from the University of Manitoba and an MBA in operations research from the University of Alberta.
