In recent years Japanese rights holders have exhibited a newfound eagerness to monetise and enforce their patents – as opposed to simply sitting on them as part of a defensive, wait-and-see approach. While this shift in attitude is generating plenty of work for lawyers at the moment, significant increases in the size of in-house teams could be of concern for patent attorneys in the future. Inbound work from China remains a notable source of revenue.
