Gill Jennings & Every LLP (GJE) is a leading firm of European patent and trademark attorneys, based in London and Munich, and represents a broad range of clients, including individual inventors, early-stage/spin-out companies, universities, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and global corporations. We provide the full range of IP services covering patents, trademarks, designs, copyright and domain names, as well as IP strategy, due diligence and other IP support services. Our attorneys have specialist expertise in all major technologies, including engineering, physics, information technology/software, electronics, life sciences, medical technologies and chemistry.
The firm has a strong and flexible attorney team, including some of the most talented and experienced people in our profession. We take pride in the work we do and welcome the opportunity to work with innovative and forward-thinking businesses – helping them to turn their innovations into patented inventions leading to commercial success.
Our considerable legal, technical and commercial experience provides us with the ability to think creatively, bringing original ideas to complex areas of technology. We place great emphasis on understanding clients’ businesses and commercial objectives and focus our advice accordingly.
GJE currently has 12 partners, 17 qualified attorneys and 19 part-qualified attorneys and technical assistants. The attorney teams are supported by a highly trained team of paralegals and specialist secretaries forming part of our further 50-plus staff across the various operational functions of the firm. Following our ethos of strong teamwork, we are based in a single large office in London, ensuring that all know-how and client teams are located in one place.
Our Munich office is located close to the European Patent Office (EPO) and fee earners are based there when engaged in opposition and appeal proceedings in front of the EPO on behalf of clients. We have built up a strong reputation for opposition work at the EPO, with several of our specialist opposition attorneys each handling around 20 to 30 opposition oral proceedings per year. The size of our team enables both complex and numerous cases to be handled effectively over a wide variety of different technologies, resulting in an enviable success rate for clients. Our opposition team also works with clients across all technology areas to challenge their competitors’ patents, enabling them to carry out their commercial activities or move into new areas of commercial interest. Measured over a 10-year period, our opposition offence and defence success rates greatly exceed industry averages.
GJE is entrusted with handling European patent matters for some of the world’s largest companies. Nevertheless, our client base is extensive and diverse, with clients in all fields of technology and including many established SMEs and early-stage, fast-growth businesses. This reflects the adaptability of our firm’s staff and systems to service clients’ needs in the way they want. Our broad client base provides us with a deep understanding of the issues that face companies of all sizes in all corners of the world. It provides us with a wealth of experience on which we base our advice to maximise the impact of clients’ intellectual property in terms of protection and exploitation. We place great emphasis on understanding each client’s business, enabling us to provide a proactive service and clear, commercially focused recommendations, for which we are renowned.
GJE has invested heavily in state-of-the-art integrated IT systems which enable us to work extremely efficiently. These systems not only deliver cost savings which we pass on to our clients, but also provide us with the flexibility to meet our clients’ needs, including working with clients’ in-house practice management systems, specific e-billing requirements, encrypted communications and client-specific automated service level requirements.
We attach great importance to acquiring regular feedback from our clients and employees and have a net promoter score in the top quartile. Our internal goal is to break into the coveted Sunday Times Best Companies to Work For list, having already been recognised by Best Company.
