PONS IP is a global IP firm, founded in 1945 and headquartered in Madrid. Its domestic network is extensive with seven regional offices (Barcelona, Alicante, Seville, Zaragoza, Valencia, Vigo and Vitoria), and our international presence in relevant economic hubs (Bogota, Medellin, San Francisco, Guangzhou and Brussels) is key to our clients.
Through our office in Bogota, the firm offers a one-stop shop IP service in Latin America. We know the inconveniences and problems that clients and companies usually face when filing or prosecuting patent or trademark applications in most Latin American countries. We also know the importance of immediate feedback on an application or prompt replies to emails. For that reason, we have implemented our European methodology in the region, to provide clients with top-quality services, total commitment and outstanding experience.
PONS’ team is one of the largest in Spain, with 130 people from different countries. Spanish, English, German, Chinese, French, Korean, Turkish, Russian and Bulgarian are spoken fluently at the firm.
The firm’s practice encompasses every aspect of intellectual property, including:
- utility models;
- industrial designs;
- domain names;
- technology transfer and licensing;
- market intelligence reports;
- freedom-to-operate reports;
- intangible asset valuation;
- data protection; and
- legal services.
The firm covers every stage of the IP lifecycle, but prosecution is where we truly excel. That is the reason why we are a top filer of Patent Cooperation Treaty applications in Spain and one of the top filers of EU trademark applications in Spain and Europe.
The firm files and prosecutes patent applications in Spain, Europe and Latin America, and defends them before national IP offices, the EU Intellectual Property Office, the European Patent Office (EPO) and the World Intellectual Property Organisation, as well as national and international courts. PONS also provides strategic counsel and support to innovative companies, hospitals, universities and national research centres, which have some of the most cutting-edge technology.
The patent department is composed of 35 people, including Spanish and European patent attorneys, PhD holders and a former examiner of the EPO. Many of our staff worked in big corporations before joining PONS. This has provided them with a better understanding of both sides.
The team handles patent cases from every technology field, including:
- renewable energies;
- software; and
- plant varieties.
PONS also creates competitive intelligence reports. With analysis of the competition and technology, these reports provide a solid argument for sales processes, guidance on whether to invest in a technology and answers to relevant questions, such as: What are the product’s chances of success? Does someone else have a similar product? Is it worth developing the product? In which countries can the product be marketed? Who are the main competitors in each country?
We have also established the PONS Foundation, a non-profit organisation whose main objective is to raise awareness of the importance of the defence, investment and development of intellectual property and R&D for economic and social development. In order to channel this objective, the PONS Foundation – together with the King Juan Carlos University – launched the PONS master’s in intellectual property, competition and new technologies. It is one of the most renowned master’s in its sector in Spain and is in its 11th year.
