Hans Wegner’s main areas of practice relate to patents, utility models and designs in the fields of mechanics (eg, sports equipment); physics (eg, superconductors and measuring technology); telecommunications (eg, mobile phone technology and multimedia); and hardware and software (eg, computer production and databases).
Dr Wegner regularly represents clients in patent application proceedings before the German Patent and Trademark Office and the European Patent Office (EPO), including opposition proceedings. In recent years, he has successfully represented clients in many proceedings, particularly before the EPO’s opposition departments and technical boards of appeal.
Another area of Dr Wegner’s practice as a patent attorney involves enforcing IP rights before the patent chambers of the German civil courts, as well as parallel nullity proceedings before the German Federal Patent Court. With his extensive experience, Dr Wegner can provide expert advice to clients seeking to establish a portfolio of valid patent assets.
In addition, Dr Wegner has frequently served as an expert in patent law for members of the German Parliament.
Dr Wegner is the author of the German chapter in Software Patents Worldwide and other publications relating to his practice.
Dr Wegner regularly speaks on issues of patent law – particularly adversary patent proceedings and the wording of patent claims – at seminars at the Heidelberg Academy.
