James R Batchelder is a first-chair trial attorney and a member of Ropes & Gray’s governing policy committee. He was previously the managing partner of Ropes & Gray’s Silicon Valley and San Francisco offices and a co-chair of the firm’s technology, media and telecommunications group. He has over 27 years of experience representing many of the world’s top technology companies. He litigates high-stakes IP cases in district courts, before the US International Trade Commission and in post-grant review proceedings before the US Patent and Trademark Office Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Mr Batchelder is continually recognised as a leading practitioner for IP litigation by publications including Benchmark Litigation, Best Lawyers in America, Legal 500, the IAM Patent 1000, Managing Intellectual Property and Super Lawyers California. He was also named as one of California’s Top Intellectual Property Lawyers by The Daily Journal.
Mr Batchelder frequently speaks and publishes on IP issues and regularly lectures on IP strategy topics, including “The Real World Impact of Recent Supreme Court Patent Decisions”, “Best Patent Practices”, “Insisting That Trolls Play Fair” and “Patent Challenges at the USPTO: What You Need to Know to Make Effective Use of Post-Grant Challenges”, at venues such as the University of California Berkeley School of Law, Stanford University and the Association of Corporate Counsel.
Mr Batchelder has also volunteered as a high school mock trial team coach.
He received a JD from the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law.
