Greece endured more economic and political turmoil in 2016, and the economy remains fragile at best, with the road to recovery proving long and rocky. The capital controls introduced in Summer 2015 have been eased, but ultimately remain in place – and are unlikely to be removed for the foreseeable future. This has naturally had a negative impact on the IP market. Domestic companies are loath to part with funds unnecessarily, while multinationals are largely focusing their attentions on more stable European countries. The courtroom backlog is still acute too; while the protracted lawyers’ strike has now ended, it could take up to a decade for some cases to be processed.

A & K Metaxopoulos & Partners Law Firm
The nimble, forward-looking A & K Metaxopoulos comes into its own handling media technology patents. Kriton Metaxopoulos and Irini Daroussou are its leading lights, but it is also home to a strong pool of associates, all of whom are theoretically astute and embody the firm’s progressive, personal and cost-conscious ethos. Managing partner Metaxopoulos is a trusted guide of start-ups; his sage patent counsel comes laced with complementary company law expertise. The scholarly Daroussou puts her academic brilliance and strategic nous to fine use on both sides of the contentious/non-contentious divide.
Ballas, Pelecanos & Associates LPC
Ballas, Pelecanos & Associates is a full-service law firm with deep roots in intellectual property. In the last six years, it has been involved in more than 30 significant patent disputes and has represented a panoply of household names, making it one of the most active players in the market. Continually building on its stellar record in pharmaceutical patent litigation, it is currently assisting in a suit against AstraZeneca over a nullity action for the Greek part of a vital European patent. Involved in this matter, George Ballas leads from the front: “Not only does he have very strong technical expertise, he also has considerable courtroom experience. He is responsive, practical and thoughtful, and really takes the time to understand his clients’ business.” With 14 specialised IP attorneys on board, Dr Helen G Papaconstantinou and Partners is “one of the country’s most famed firms for patent prosecution”. It collaborates closely with clients, ensuring that they are apprised of every risk from the outset and preparing answers to all possible objections. Talisman Helen G Papaconstantinou is currently president of the Greek groups of both the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys and the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property – appointments which bear testament to her magnificent reputation. Contentious ace Henning Voelkel is another client magnet. Working with Grapa and SNFL, he was instrumental in securing the first decision in the country on the protection of Community plant varieties; this places him at the vanguard of a field that is expected to blossom in the near future.
KLC Law Firm
Intellectual property is a central pillar at the full-service KLC. Commercially focused to a fine point, it can factor in every conceivable consequence to dispense 360-degree counsel. With the capabilities to serve clients in eight different languages and a solid network of alliances the world over, it has fast become a favourite of international companies. “Kate Michalopoulou is a highly specialised IP professional, who is at her very best in pharmaceutical litigation.” Her formidable courtroom presence has won her respect from all corners.
Patrinos & Kilimiris
Established in 1919, Patrinos & Kilimiris is Greece’s oldest IP firm. It stands apart for its singular command of the pharmaceuticals sector, deep technical know-how and potent performances in the courtroom. This is in no small part thanks to the “vastly experienced” Constantinos Kilimiris. “He has a great handle on the pharmaceutical patent enforcement landscape in Greece, and provides pragmatic, commercially focused advice. His insight into the unique aspects of Greek litigation is brilliant.” Even competitors enjoy locking horns with him: “I always appreciate and admire his knowledge and the way he handles difficult cases,” enthuses one. Manolis Metaxakis and Anastasios Kilimiris are two further heavyweights on the team. Metaxakis has been working with Constantinos on a high-profile matter for Novartis against Welding GmbH & Co over a patent relating to a dementia treatment; in a striking victory, the Athens Single Member Court of First Instance granted a preliminary injunction to Novartis, even though the patent had been successfully opposed before the European Patent Office. The business-savvy Anastasios is a robust litigator who also has what it takes to get lucrative licensing transactions over the line.
